MAUVE IRISES SEAT COVER:
A VERSATILE DESIGN FOR
A FUTURE PROJECT

What an ideal design for a needlepoint seat cover or chair pad!

 



 

Originally I developed this original 19th century Art Nouveau design for a needlepoint cushion.

 

 

A close-up photo of the hand-painted canvas at right shows the range of mauve colours used on the stylized flowers, contrasted by their graphic linear leaves in a palette of cool greens. 

 

 

Thanks to its repetitive pattern, it would also work as a seat cover.

 



WHAT TYPE OF CHAIR WOULD SUIT IT?

 

To give you an idea, I’ve placed this design photographically on a mahogany chair from the Arts and Crafts Movement, which was approximately the same period as the mauve irises design.

 

 

Why this type of chair?

•The broad back splat of the chair with its marquetry iris motif works beautifully with the mauve irises of the needlepoint tapestry.

•The rich dark brown of the background needlepoint design matches the red-brown of the mahogany, which in turn complements the mauves and greens of the stylized irises and leaves.

•The fine lines of the chair’s legs, stretchers and seat back reflect the linear design of the tapestry.

However, I have to be more practical!

This original chair is probably priceless!

But there are other chairs in a similar style that I’m sure I can find at flea markets, or what about trying more contemporary chairs that would be more affordable.
