The Satin Stitch ,with its elegant shading, creates an impression of colourful water lily petals for a Scissors’ Case design,
called ‘Shades of Satin’ ….
inspired by Monet’s Impressionist paintings of water lilies at Giverny.
The scissors’ case was designed and stitched exclusively for my TWELFTH VIVA ZIVA ! Newsletter 1212.

I have had a love affair with Monet’s home and gardens at Giverny practically all my life!
I fell in love with his ‘Giverny’ paintings when I was a young girl. Years later, I was taken, by chance, to Giverny just a few weeks after his home and gardens were opened to the public for the first time in 1980. I’ve been back many times since and still feel the same joy I felt the first time.
Claude Monet lived for nearly forty-three years at his home in Giverny. Passionate about gardening as well as by colour, he designed his flower garden and water garden as true works of art.
Never before had a painter so shaped his subjects in nature before painting them. And so he created his works twice. Monet would find his inspiration in this water garden for more than twenty years.
Almost ten years were necessary to restore the garden and the house to their former magnificence.
A wonderful testament to his genius.
I wanted to find a stitch that would allow me to create an impression of colour shading for the petals… similar to the water lily photo at left (actually taken from today’s water garden at Giverny.)
The colours of this stunning flower range from a rich rose pink at the bottom of the petal and slowly soften to delicate white tips.
I wanted to recreate this effect in needlepoint. What would be the best stitch? How do I get the subtle change in colour?
After some research, I decided to use the Satin Stitch and try an embroidery technique called ’Shading’ for the first time!
The Satin Stitch , with its shading, allowed me to create a three-dimensional ‘impressionistic’ effect for the water lily petals with a range of colours from deep rose to very light rose and finally white.
I created an Art Nouveau-style design for the scissors’ case, because it was THE decorative and architectural style prevalent in Monet’s time.
OTHER STITCHES FOR THE SCISSORS’ CASE
The Satin Stitch not only created the impression of water lily petals but it, along with other decorative stitches, also provided me the means to create the relevant symbolism for the over-all design, for example:
A wonderful range of stitches for this elegant scissors’ case.
Don’t worry… I’ll show you how to create it in the newsletter! It’s not difficult!
Full instructions and chart on how to create this ‘Shades of Satin’ design, are included in the next VIVA ZIVA! Newsletter.
(I’ve never tried shading before, so I’ll share with you the do’s and don’ts and valuable tips I’ve learned.)
