This second free needlepoint napkin ring design, ‘CAMILLE’, was created and stitched exclusively for my fifth VIVA ZIVA ! Newsletter #1005.

My inspiration for this second needlepoint napkin ring design originated from a late 19th century painting I’ve always loved by Claude Monet called ‘Broderie de Camille’ (Camille’s Embroidery).
I’ve often wondered what Monet’s wife was stitching and where the tapestry is now.
This painting has always given me a satisfying sense of continuity and tradition for a craft that I love.
During the many years of living in France, I’ve seen many 19th century needlepoint tapestries and embroidered linen in antique and second-hand shops.
Many women in France today still have a passion for stitching these time-honoured designs.
These elegant and very delicate traditional pieces of needlework have influenced my very North American contemporary taste.
So a nod to the past with this elegant napkin ring design!
The ‘CAMILLE’ needlepoint napkin ring design …what an elegant final touch to a beautiful table setting!
Light the candles and oil lamps and take yourself back in time!
DIFFERENT NAPKIN RING DESIGNS FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS
In contrast to the napkin ring design in the last newsletter (#1004) with its rainbow of colours, this delicate design inspired by 19th century needlepoint required a completely different approach to the use of colour.
Last time, I used bright bold primary colours to create an informal setting.
This time, to fashion a more traditional setting, I chose a classic and controlled range of crewel wool yarn colours in royal blue, gold and white with accents of gold and silver threads.
A perfect complement to the traditional white linen tablecloth and embroidered linen napkins.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are a subscriber to the VIVA ZIVA! newsletter and want to make up this napkin ring, contact me and I’ll send you a free chart of the initial you want for the central medallion.
Two new stitches to learn for this newsletter!
For the small delicate swirling ‘branches’ in the design, I used the ‘STEM STITCH’ in gold metallic thread.
The design is also punctuated with several FRENCH KNOTS, also in gold metallic thread.
Click here to look at these two decorative stitches , complete with instructions, that I incorporated in other needlepoint designs for the ZIVA Collection.
The VIVA ZIVA! Newsletter # 1005 will also give you tips on how to work with metallic threads.
The classic basketweave stitch is used for the rest of the napkin ring design. Click here if you want to review the basketweave stitch.
