Pieter Cornelis Mondrian, was a Dutch painter and art theoretician who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements.
Mondrian's art was highly utopian and was concerned with a search for universal values and aesthetics.
He
was a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which he
co-founded with Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational
form which he termed Neoplasticism. This was the new 'pure plastic art'
which he believed was necessary in order to create 'universal beauty'.
To express this, Mondrian eventually decided to limit his formal vocabulary to the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), the three primary values (black, white, and gray), and the two primary directions (horizontal and vertical).
Although
his early work was representational, he slowly developed his artistic
philosophy, his works slowly devolving first into cubism, then to pure
abstraction and non-representation.
But his art goes
beyond merely aesthetic considerations: his search for harmony through
his painting has an ethical significance. Rooted in a strict puritan
tradition of Dutch Calvinism and inspired by his theosophical beliefs,
he continually strove for purity during his long career.
We took 3 sections of the Mondrian painting - two small and one large to create a combination for the first necklace design.
Here's what we created:
First, a free necklace design inspired by Mondrian (see its chart in Newsletter #2435 to be issued in October/November 2024)
Second, the centre of the design to create a single design with a long or short chain. Your choice.
Third, or what about a bracelet (above right)? There are many to choose from Mondrian's paintings!
We created a few necklace designs and one bracelet - but you could create your own.
Using the black lines, you could develop a design all your own. Just place the 3 primary colours (red, yellow and blue) in the squares you created! Or the colours of your choice (see above)!
