CROSS STITCH
CREATES BOLD DESIGNS

I created this design,’ FLEUR-DE-LIS’, exclusively to show you the great benefits of CROSS STITCH when used in needlepoint projects.

The Cross Stitch is normally associated with embroidery, but takes on a bolder appearance with needlepoint.

Because of the nature of the stitch, it creates a squared effect…perfect for developing graphic designs where clean straight corners are required.

So I created a border for this fleur-de-lis design (see above) with a series of squares…ideal for using the cross stitch with its simple, bold lines.

I also used the same stitch to create the diagonal lines between the fleur-de-lis motif to make it ‘stand out’ visually from the tent stitch in the background.

The simplicity of this stitch reminded me of the plain bold heraldic designs of a by-gone era.

As a source of inspiration, why not use the fleur-de-lis design, with its mediaeval royalist roots, as a motif?

I placed this regal symbol (in 3 shades of gold) in a diagonal pattern on a turquoise background, bordered by dark wine red squares on a gold background.

The result: A colourful and youthful design ideal for creating a small tote bag!

I couldn’t resist!

I added more borders, one in red and one in turquoise...
both using the cross stitch to continue the uncluttered, straightforward design!

Now I have a larger tote bag design!

You can choose how big you want to go!

 

 

 

MAKING UP TIPS:

I picked a dark wine red for the fabric for the rest of the bag, with bright red handles.

But you could pick out any colour from the design to make up the bag.

Even a purchased natural canvas tote bag would work.
