BABY’S FIRST
CHRISTMAS STOCKING!

Our decorations for a baby’s first Christmas stocking called ‘A Note to Santa’, featuring using the Penelope Canvas… were designed and stitched exclusively for our TWENTY-THIRD FREE VIVA ZIVA! Newsletter #2318.

DESIGN CONCEPT FOR CHRISTMAS STOCKING

We wanted to create a very tactile design to appeal to a child’s senses!

How did we do it?

Together with the stitched textures, we are suggesting adding tassels or pom-poms, beads, ribbons and a Christmas bell!  

Also, to add to the effect, we left the canvas exposed in some of the backgrounds of the motifs and painted them red, silver and gold! 

All these decorations are attached to an existing purchased stocking or one made up using white felt for the cuff and red felt for the rest of the Christmas stocking.  

FEATURING THE PENELOPE CANVAS

The main design for the Christmas stocking is the needlepoint pocket for your child to leave a note to Santa Claus- our star of the show! 

We used the very traditional 19^th century method of using the Double Thread or Penelope canvas, which is ideal for adding a lot of detail in certain areas and a larger stitch for other areas.  

The canvas is stitched in petit point, used over single threads, and gros point over pairs of threads…….a perfect combination for creating specific detail in flowers, figures, and in our case, SANTA’S FACE!

SANTA CLAUS IS OUR CHRISTMAS STOCKING STAR!

Thanks to the Penelope canvas (petit point), we were able to depict the details of Santa’s face, moustache and beard and not lose any detail on this small pocket (3.25” x 3.5”).  

We used the larger stitch over 2 threads (gros point) for the gold star and green background.  

OUR FINAL CHRISTMAS STOCKING IS READY TO HANG ON THE MANTLE!

The Penelope canvas for Santa Claus pocket is fully stitched, ...

and the rest of the stocking decorations have areas of exposed regular canvas painted in red, gold and silver, and decorated with beads, tassels and ribbons!
