ORCHARD SERIES CUSHIONS

Our French Country Series has been a great hit!

You have ordered them as seat covers and as wall art …… now they’re available as 6 cushions designs !

The photo of the cushion above of our popular “Cherries” motif gives you an idea how beautifully this series can accessorize your home.

These larger motifs add a striking accent to your favourite sofa!

YOUR STITCH TO TRY

DOUBLE CROSS STITCH

If you’ve used the cross stitch before, the DOUBLE CROSS STITCH is the same method except in this pattern you stitch it over two canvas strands instead of one.

It’s the perfect stitch to accent the quarter hours on the clock motif.

  • As shown in the chart above right, you can usually work the double cross stitch in two ways; either work all the diagonals in one direction first, or complete each cross before going on to the next.
  • With the 4 cross stitches we featured here, you complete each cross first.
  • Always work the top diagonal in the same direction.

OPTIONAL DECORATIVE STITCH

I stitched a delicate motif in small chevron patterns, (similar to a straight Gobelin stitch) to create a diamond shape in the centre of the clock face.

You may want to try it, but it’s not crucial to the final tapestry.

  • Start with Step One and stitch the small chevrons in the shape as shown above
  • After it’s complete, stitch over with the ‘filler’ threads as shown (Step Two). I’ve shown them in red to make reading the chart easier, but they should be stitched in the same colour (gold) as the chevrons.

PRACTICE THESE NEW STITCHES FIRST!

Keep practicing following the sequence of stitching in the charts until you feel confident. Then you are ready to stitch the free design.

FREE DESIGN

‘PERSIAN STAR’ CARRIAGE CLOCK DESIGN

This FREE carriage clock design “PERSIAN STAR” combines the traditional mahogany wood and period details of the small carriage clock from Sudberry House with an intricate Persian motif for the clock face.

This classic combination was inspired by the grand Georgian salons of the 18th century in England, with their oriental carpets and mahogany furniture and panelling.

The result is an elegant timepiece for your home!

READING THE CHARTS:

’PERSIAN STAR’ CLOCK FACE DESIGN

NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • The double cross stitches are shown on the chart in dark red and teal colours
  • The grey colour in the centre of the motif is raw needlepoint canvas and NOT to be stitched to allow for the clock mechanism.

YARN COLOURS

All colours for the clock face design are chosen from DMC 25 Mouliné Special 100% cotton yarns.

They are readily available at your local needlepoint shop or online.

7 DMC 25 Mouliné Special yarn colours :

  • #816 Red – 1 skein
  • #3852 Yellow – 2 Skeins
  • #762 Cream White – 2 skeins
  • #926 Soft Green – 1 skein
  • #3809 Teal Blue– 3 skeins
  • #939 Navy Blue – 2 Skeins
  • #3844 Bright Blue – 1 skein

OTHER MATERIALS

You will also need :

  • White 14 mesh (hpi) interlock canvas 6” x 8” (15 x 20cm):
  • Needlepoint Needle: For 14-mesh canvas, use size 20 needle
  • Masking Tape
  • Sudberry House (www.sudberry.com) Small Carriage Clock #48041

Go to the ZIVA site for more detail info on the MATERIALS required.

STARTING UP AND STITCHING IN PROGRESS

Start by marking the outline of the case on the canvas with a pencil or WATERPROOF pen following the count from the chart and centred on the canvas.

NOTE: Make sure that the marked area measures 3 .5” x 5”. This measurement is the design area for the face of the clock and the finished stitching can not be larger.

PHOTO ABOVE LEFT:

  • After you have marked the outline and re-checked the necessary dimensions, start stitching this outline with the navy blue #939 thread (as shown). This will provide you a benchmark for counting.
  • Next stitch the cream white #762 motif completely

PHOTO ABOVE RIGHT:

  • You can then fill in the pattern from top to bottom with the Tent Stitch, Double Cross Stitch and the Optional Decorative stitches as designated in the chart.

MAKING UP SUGGESTIONS

  • After you have completed the stitching and checked the dimensions again, you need to trim the perimeter canvas close to the stitching and cut a small hole in the canvas in the middle to allow for the clock mechanism shaft.
  • NOTE: Interlock canvas allows you to trim fairly closely to the canvas, but still leave at least one row of canvas, which will be hidden by the clock frame.
  • Before assembling the clock, I painted the clock hands in silver to make reading the time better, and it also better suited my décor. (Sudberry House provide the hands in black.)
  • Sudberry House provide complete assembly instructions with their Small Carriage Clock. Read thoroughly BEFORE you cut the canvas and assemble the clock

ASK THE ZIVA DIVA!

QUESTION:
Dear Ziva,

I am interested in ordering a custom size seat cover for my Victorian chair. There are a couple of patterns that interest me. What information do you need in order to give me a price? Stephanie

Dear Stephanie,

Thank you for your interest.

In order for us to fully understand the scope of the project you want to undertake, you need to provide us with:

  • The name of the motif you have chosen.
  • At least one photo of the chair showing the full chair seat.
  • Measurements:
    • Rectangular seat cushion: measure from side to side and from front to back.
    • If the seat has an unusual shape or is not rectangular (e.g. tapered from front to back), those measurements are also necessary.
    • Always use a cloth tape when measuring to allow us to take the seat padding dimensions into account (see photo below)
    • If the padded seat drops into the chair frame, take out the seat and measure the width and depth with the cloth tape as shown in photo below

With all the above information, we can provide you with a quote.

Once we get started setting out the pattern on the canvas, we may ask you for more detail at that time.

I’m looking forward to receiving your information soon. I hope we’ll be able to work together on your project.

Best Regards,

Sylvia
